The Power of Referrals

Posted On September 3, 2026

Referrals carry a lot of weight. How often have you used a business or bought a product based on a referral from a friend, family member or someone you trust?

In business, referrals can drive new opportunities and are one of the most valuable forms of marketing. They cost little to generate but can have a significant impact on building your business and network.

Why are referrals so powerful?

Referrals are an endorsement from someone we trust and because of this we are naturally more likely to take notice. The referral is credible because it is based on an individual’s evidence as opposed to a marketing message.

When the recommendation comes from a family member or friend who understands our own preferences and needs, it becomes even more relevant and trustworthy.

At PN Personnel we consistently attract positive word of mouth. We are regularly approached by job seekers and businesses who have heard about our services through someone they know.

For us, it’s the best way to build connections with people who are more likely to value and benefit from the services we provide.

How to get referrals

Always ask for a referral or introduction from clients and customers. An introduction can open the door to a new relationship and create opportunities to grow your business and network.

It costs nothing to ask and can lead to a valuable new connection.

“If you know anyone else who could benefit from our services, I’d love an intro.”

Action the referral

Once you’ve received the referral make sure you action it.

Follow up promptly and mention the person who referred you. This instantly creates a connection and gives you common ground to expand upon.

Referrals are linked to reputation so ensure you follow up professionally.

Acknowledge those who referrer you

“Thanks for recommending XX to me! I really appreciate it.”

Acknowledgement and recognition goes a long way. Recognise your referral sources and let them know you appreciate their support.

Depending on the nature of the referral and the relationship this recognition may be by way of a phone call, email or note to thank them. If the referral has resulted in substantial business, it may be appropriate to give the referrer a gift of appreciation.

Earn it

Your reputation matters. The best way to encourage referrals is to consistently provide a service that gives people confidence in you and your business.

Invest in your relationships, deliver on your promises and make every interaction count. Know who your key contacts are and stay connected with them.

When you consistently provide a positive experience or quality product, people are more likely to recommend you, and that's the real power of referrals.
