How to respond to 8 common interview questions

An interview is your chance to demonstrate to an employer how your skills, experience and strengths match the requirements of the role, and to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the opportunity.


Before your interview take some time prior to prepare and practice your answers to potential interview questions. This will help you feel more confident and ready to share the key skills, experience and examples you want the employer to know.



A thoughtful response to these common questions will assist you to stand out in your next interview.

1.   Tell me about yourself.

Often the first question asked in an interview, this open-ended question helps set the scene on who you are and what you can bring to the role. The best way to answer this is with a brief focused response which highlights your relevant educational and professional qualifications and your previous achievements. A small amount of personal information is okay, particularly if it helps demonstrate your personality or connects with the company’s values. 


2.   Why do you want this job?

This is your chance to demonstrate to the employer you have a genuine interest in the position and the industry and emphasise your enthusiasm for the role. Research the company beforehand and tailor your response to show you’ve done your homework to understand the company and share how their values and organisational goals fit with your own.


3.   What are your biggest strengths?

Don’t be humble – be proud of your strengths and answer with an example demonstrating an achievement in your previous work which would be of benefit in this new position.  


This gives the employer more than just a list of your positive attributes, it demonstrates how you have put them into practice.


4.   What professional skills would you like to develop further?

This is an opportunity to demonstrate your self-awareness and commitment to professional growth. Identify a skill you would like to develop further and explain how you are actively working to improve it through training, mentoring, feedback or practical experience. Employers value candidates who are willing to learn, adapt and continuously develop their capabilities.


5.   Why do you want to leave your current employer?

Focus on the positives such as taking on more responsibility, career progression, training and development of your skills, or working with a great team. Avoid any negative comments regarding your current employer or workplace. 


6.   Where do you see yourself in 12 months?

Employers are looking for you to confirm your commitment to the role and company. They want to know their investment in your onboarding and training will result in a loyal and motivated employee.


Think about what you would like to achieve in the next 12 months and how this role can help you get there. This is your chance to reinforce your enthusiasm, ambition and your willingness to make a positive contribution.


7.   How do you deal with pressure and stress?

The best way to answer this is to use a real example. 

Explain the nature of the situation, how you responded at the time and the outcome. Discuss your reflection as to what you learned from the experience and whether there is anything you would do differently if a similar situation arose in the future.  


8.   Why should we hire you over someone else?

Answer this by sharing your unique selling points and strengths to sum up why you are the best person for the role.   


Be prepared you may be also asked about your salary expectations. Often you will have already discussed this with your recruiter so you will be prepared and informed as how you want to position yourself.


Remember each interview is a learning experience, it’s not just the employer getting to know you, but also for you to learn more about the business, team and work environment.
