Applied. Waited. Heard nothing. Now what?
Posted On September 16, 2026
It’s the not knowing that’s the worst. Job hunting is not easy and when you spend the time and effort to tailor your application to the role and hear nothing in return, it can be extremely frustrating.
You’re not alone. The current job market is highly competitive with strong applicants looking for a new position. Our recent Office Administrator role advertised attracted over 300 applications.
Here’s how to ensure your application has the best chance of progressing, what to do when you don’t hear back and how working with a recruiter can benefit your search.
Why your application isn’t hitting the mark
- You don’t have to meet ALL the criteria in the job description, yet you do need to demonstrate clearly how your previous/current experience aligns with the role and the benefits you bring to the company. Read the Job Description carefully and make sure your application addresses the key requirements.
- Don’t delay in applying. As mentioned earlier, due to the sheer number of applications we had to close off our job for our Office Administrator. Many job applications are reviewed as they are received, so apply as soon as you can.
- Your CV doesn’t showcase your strengths. Make sure your CV has examples of your achievements using examples relevant to the vacancy you are applying for.
- Check your online presence. Review your social media profiles (switch to incognito mode first) so you can see how you appear to others. Your LinkedIn profile and social media form part of an employers first impression and many will look you up.
The Follow-up
Knowing when and how to follow up is important.
There may be a closing date on the application but if there’s no set timeframe follow-up if you haven’t heard anything in a few weeks.
If your application hasn’t been acknowledged as received, this can be a good opening line.
Try and follow up first by phone and if you cannot connect by phone reach out via email. Ensure you remain positive in your communication, focusing on the role and what you can bring to it.
By phone: Your best strategy is to speak with the employer directly. This gives you the chance to confirm your enthusiasm and motivation for the role and confirm where you are in the process. Ask if your application is still being considered and what the next steps in the recruitment process are. Reconfirm when you expect to hear back.
By email: If you are unable to reach the right person by phone, send them an email. Keep this short, let them know you have applied for the role, when you applied and why you are interested in the position and the company. Ask if you are still being considered for the position. Let them know you are available for further discussions and reconfirm your contact details.
Have your pitch ready
Before you pick up the phone or send an email plan what you will say. Use your elevator pitch – a short couple of sentences highlighting you and what you can bring to the role and business. Practice this so you are confident in your delivery.
The benefits of working with a recruiter
If you are looking for work and have not yet reached out to us at PN Personnel I encourage you to do so. As recruiters we have expansive connections and networks across the job market, including access to opportunities which may not be publicly advertised. We can help you position yourself effectively, identify where your skills and experience can add value, and provide insight into what local employers are looking for. With our strong relationships with local businesses, we can often make an introduction that could open the door to your next opportunity.
Finally, keep your chin up, most job seekers are doing everything right. Securing the right opportunity can simply take time and patience. Stay positive, keep putting yourself out there and remember the right role is worth waiting for, it could be just around the corner.
