Recruitment insights for 2024

Employers throughout the Manawatu are cautiously optimistic regarding the year ahead. With the many opportunities for our wide range of industries, Manawatu is well-placed for job offerings in 2024.


The tide is changing from the candidate short market of previous years as more jobseekers enter the market, giving increased scope and selection for Manawatu employers. Positions across industries will attract a large number of applications however specialised skillsets will remain harder to secure. Employers need to move quickly through their recruitment process to qualify candidates when they do identify the required skillsets. 

Skilled employees remain tight within the construction and finance sector. 


For talented candidates, multiple offers and counter offers remain on offer. I recommend steady and timely communication throughout the recruitment process so you can ensure your talent remains engaged in your role and business.


We anticipate movement within the Public Sector with more contractors coming into the market. 


Job adverts are also starting to ease across New Zealand, with the Manawatu region faring better than larger cities in job offerings to candidates.


The unemployment rate for NZ now sits at 4% and we do expect this to rise throughout the year. The Employment and Manufacturers Association believe this number will rise based on the number of employer enquiries received at the end of 2023 looking to restructure their business.
