Matt's Quarter 3 Recruitment Market Update

Posted On Oct 19, 2023

The Manawatu region is resilient and the wide range of industries operating locally provide a range of opportunities. Throughout Quarter 3 (July, August and September 2023) industry sectors such as accounting and finance have remained strong within whilst we have seen tightening in the construction and education industry.

From small to large organisations, employers are conscious of the current economic climate, this is reflected in their recruitment and business decisions. PN Personnel is a preferred recruitment provider throughout the region because of our understanding and history of local businesses and the Manawatu employment market. Our outstanding reputation for providing a quality candidates experience attracts the best talent.

There’s been good news recently for dairy farmers with Fonterra increasing the forecast payout, which has eased some financial pressure and will have a positive flow on effect to businesses within the agricultural sector.

Moving forward from the election we anticipate an increase in permanent recruitments across our industries.  Our Quarter 3 permanent placements included senior appointments including General Management and other executive roles.

Compared to the previous Quarter, we saw an 8% increase in temporary assignments in Quarter 3 with manufacturing a main industry filled by our temporary employees. View all our Quarter 3 Industry placements below.

Unemployment throughout the Manawatu region remains low. CEDA’s latest statistics from the end of June 2023 report 3.4% unemployment in the Manawatu, matching the figure nationwide.

Talent is looking to relocate to the Manawatu. We have had registrations of interest from quality candidates, both locally and from outside the region, and we continue to utilise our own networks and connections to source the best possible talent to fill our vacancies.

Across NZ net immigration has increased which has eased some labour market pressures. Over the last quarter PN Personnel has seen an increase in immigrant application for vacancies however due to the timeframes required to complete the immigration steps this is yet to fill our immediate need for clients.

Looking ahead we are anticipating a busy end to the year, with an increase in both permanent and temporary recruits. Employers will be looking to secure their team for 2024 and organise cover to allow for themselves and their team to have a break over the summer months.

Feel free to reach out for a confidential chat regarding your business recruitment needs. The team and I can ensure you have a robust recruitment plan to cover any leave and ensure your business continuity this summer. Let’s set you up for a prosperous 2024.
