Should you use AI to write your CV?

Posted On Nov 02, 2023

Yes and no, your CV reflects your professional accomplishments, your working attributes and is our first impression of who you are as a person. If the language used in your CV isn’t the way you present yourself or communicate, your AI generated CV is not an authentic reflection of yourself. This could misrepresent your suitability (or incompatibility) for a role.

AI can be an effective starting point.

From there, the personalisation and specific wording of your content needs to be tailored to you.

Inspiration and templates
Utilising AI to create a brand-new CV or update your existing CV can give you the inspiration and momentum you need. It can provide structure and a template for your information in a cohesive and manageable way.

Using AI will identify key skills and words which should be included in your CV. This can be a positive, as many organisations and recruiters will use software which will scan your CV for key words, so you want to include as many appropriate keywords as possible.

Be unique.
AI will use flowery and over-embellished sentences and adjectives. Such language is an instant giveaway. Recruiters and employers/hiring managers read a lot of CVs. We can tell if a CV is genuine. You should never copy and paste an AI generated CV and call it your own. We will know.

Appropriate context and emotion
AI is unable to give context to a situation. AI will produce what you tell it, it doesn’t know you, the job or the company.

A good CV will clarify your motivations towards a specific position, detailing your experience and aptitudes specific to the role you’re applying for and highlighting why you should be considered for the role.

A Recruiters Expectations

When I read your CV I’m hoping to gain an insight into not only your work skills and accomplishments but who you are as a person and your motivations towards work.

Your CV should be tailored to you

I recently reviewed the CV for a friend just starting out in her career. She had used AI to write her CV and the words and tone of the sentences did not reflect her natural enthusiasm and vibrant personality. Although there was lots of content, the best parts of her, that made her unique, were missing. Content is irrelevant if it lacks substance.

However, the structure was established, so it was easy to rework the sentences, removing some irrelevant wording. We added additional detail regarding personal attributes and motivation to give a better sense of the enthusiastic and intelligent person she is.

Recruiters and hiring managers are not looking for the perfect CV, they are looking for a sense of who you are and what you can bring to their organisation. Let AI be your starting point and ensure you include your own voice to your CV to let your individual personality shine through.

And when you’re done – send me through your CV. If you are looking for a job register for work here, we’d love to hear from you.
