Business confidence returning in 2026

There are encouraging signs that confidence is returning across the employment market, locally, we’re feeling that shift first-hand.
The Manawatu region is often described as resilient, and our conversations with Manawatu business owners and managers are reflective of a renewed sense of optimism for 2026. Many employers are once again thinking about growth, including the skills required within their teams to succeed in the year ahead.
Economic indicators point to positive momentum
That optimism is supported by the latest September quarter data from Infometrics, which shows an uplift in regional economic activity. Across our local industries, there is renewed interest in products and services, momentum that is expected to build throughout the year.
Adding to this outlook, CEDA reports that the foundations are in place for a stronger recovery in 2026, highlighting:
- Early signs of growth in consumer demand
- Lower interest rates expected to lift business confidence
- Strengthening recruitment intentions
- Businesses feeling more optimistic overall
- Stronger labour demand anticipated in the Manawatu
Together, these indicators suggest a more active employment landscape ahead.
Recruitment intentions are increasing
Nearly half of local businesses canvassed in a recent survey by the Manawatu Business Chamber plan to hire in the next 12 months. While this is a positive signal, the survey also highlighted a familiar concern: access to skilled staff.
