Set yourself up for a new job in 2026
Posted On December 10, 2025
Get started: What you need
Before you begin applying for roles, make sure you have the essentials ready:
- Your CV should be updated and tailored to the role and industry you are wanting to work within.
- Cover letter – should also be personalised to the job, stating clearly why you want the role.
- Have two relevant referees ready. Ideally, they should be work-related, your most recent employer is best, but character references from people you’ve volunteered or worked closely with can also be suitable.
How to prepare:
- Check your social media, employers will look. Remove any unflattering photos or negative posts, and consider creating content which reflects how you’d like to be perceived professionally.
- Set yourself up on LinkedIn, a LinkedIn profile can be valuable and is another way to connect with potential employers and businesses. If you don’t have a profile yet, download our cheat sheet here.
- Take time to explore an employer’s website and social channels, and ask around if you know people connected to the business. Understanding their brand, culture, and values will help you in conversations and interviews.
