Job hugging: Why employees are staying put

Posted On October 28, 2026

Job hugging is a new trend where employees choose the stability of their current role over a move to a new one. Uncertainty in the employment market is causing people to think twice before making a move.

According to SEEK NZ, 45% of job seekers are holding off on changing jobs for at least six months because they value the stability of their current role.

For employers, this means attracting the best candidates requires more than simply advertising a vacancy. You need to give candidates a compelling reason to move.

Watching and waiting

To attract the widest pool of talent to your business, consider what will give candidates the confidence to take their next step when you advertise a role.

  • Promote stability and security.  If your business is performing well and offers long-term employment, make this clear.
  • Share your vision. Demonstrate where the business is heading and opportunities for the future.
  • Provide transparency around salary and benefits. Remuneration remains an important factor when considering a move.
  • Highlight training and development. Show candidates how they can grow with you.
  • Showcase your people and work culture. A great team and positive workplace can motivate job seekers to make a move.
  • Build an employer brand people want to be part of. Highlight what makes your business unique and different to others.

Your recruiter can help

In a job hugging market, finding the right candidate may require looking beyond active job seekers.

At PN Personnel, our local networks and connections help us identify and engage with candidates who may not be actively looking but may be open to the right opportunity.

We work closely with you to understand your business, your team and what you need from your next hire. From there we can:

  • Create a compelling advertising campaign which showcases your business and role.
  • Approach candidates in our network whose experience and values align with your needs.
  • Advocate for your business. Our conversations with candidates can ease concerns around stability and promote the opportunity and working environment you offer.

This approach can broaden your talent pool and find the right person for your team.
