Recruitment advice from our Business Manager of 20 years

Posted On June 2, 2026

“I’ve only ever had three jobs in my life, and accounting wasn’t even my first career choice. In fact, I confess to being a business school dropout.”

That confession from PN Personnel Business Manager Jo Norman may surprise those who know her today as a highly respected leader in recruitment systems, business operations, finance and technology.

Jo’s career began at NZ Rail, where she started as a junior in payroll before moving across into the accounts department. After nearly four years and a major restructure, she secured a role as an accounting junior in a Chartered Accounting firm, where she spent the next 13 years building her career.

Eventually, a desire for something new led Jo to PN Personnel where one conversation with Directors Claire Hewson and Deb Chambers changed everything.

“I came in for an interview and ended up leaving with a new job.”

An evolving role

Jo joined PN Personnel as Administration Manager, overseeing administration, finance and the front-line service coordination function. As the business evolved, so did her role.

“I would say my role has gone through an organic change to match changing business needs.”

As Directors Claire and Deb gradually stepped back from day-to-day operations, they established a Leadership Team consisting of Jo, Cushla and Matt, recognising the strength and experience already within the business.

Jo’s role developed into Business Manager, with a focus on systems, operations and supporting the long-term success of the company.

Leading innovation in recruitment systems

One of Jo’s proudest career achievements was being a major player in the implementation and configuration of Fast Track 360, a cloud-based end-to-end recruitment software platform.

Working alongside Claire and representatives from Fast Track Australia, Jo helped build and tailor the system specifically to suit PN Personnel’s needs.

“For me it was challenging and extremely rewarding. We were the first business in New Zealand to implement the full end-to-end system, front, middle and back.”

The implementation became a defining moment for the business and helped position PN Personnel as an early adopter of cloud-based recruitment technology.

Staying ahead of technology
Jo says the biggest change she has seen in the recruitment industry has been the pace of technology.

“Everything is moving to being cloud based, and automation has become a huge part of business operations.”

That forward-thinking approach proved invaluable during the Covid lockdowns, allowing the PN Personnel team to continue supporting clients and candidates seamlessly while working remotely.

Jo continues to stay actively involved in technology developments today, from introducing online timesheeting systems to participating in industry discussions around artificial intelligence and automation in the workplace.

“AI is exciting, but it’s also important to understand the difference between automation and AI. Businesses need to look at both the opportunities and the potential risks.”

Advice to business owners/clients and candidates

After 20 years working closely with businesses throughout the Manawatū, Jo has gathered plenty of practical advice.

For business owners:

  • Cash flow matters more than profit, especially in the early stages of business or during difficult economic times.
  • Don’t try to do everything yourself. It may work initially, but long term it limits growth.
  • Build a trusted team and learn to delegate or outsource where needed.
  • Focus on what you do best and use trusted professionals to support the rest.

“There’s a saying, ‘Jack of all trades and master of none’. Do what you do well and surround yourself with good people.”

For candidates, Jo’s advice is simple:

“Never give up on making something better for yourself. If you are in a job you don’t enjoy, take steps to change it. Keep an open mind to new opportunities and maintain a positive attitude. That will take you a long way.”

Why the Manawatū is special

Jo believes one of the defining strengths of the Manawatū business community is its strong sense of connection.

“People support local, reputations matter and word of mouth is a big part of business.”

She says lifestyle factors such as short commutes, affordability and community spirit continue to make the region an attractive place for both businesses and families.

Loving the work after 20 years

When asked what has kept her at PN Personnel for two decades, Jo’s answer is immediate.

“When you work for the best employer, have the best job and work with the best people, why would you leave?”

Jo adds it’s the continual evolution of her role which keeps her engaged, “I’m still learning and growing after 20 years, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.”

“I love the diversity of what I do, I genuinely have the best job. Numbers, data, and stats are my wheelhouse, but I get to work in an environment that is vibrant, fast-paced, and constantly evolving. My analytical mind gets to deal with the black and white in a world full of colour. It’s the perfect combination for me.”
