Why you should only apply for a role you really want

Posted On April 30, 2025

Being selective about the roles you apply for isn't just good for employers—it's valuable for your career journey. When you focus on positions that genuinely excite you, your enthusiasm shines through in every application, discussion and interview.

If you are looking for work, here are some valuable tips to assist you in the process.

1.     Genuine enthusiasm equals a strong application

Quality over quantity should be your strategy for your job search. It can be easy to send out your CV for every job you think you may have a chance at, but this can negatively impact your job search and employer perception.

This is especially true if you are motivated to secure work with a particular employer. We recommend taking a more discerning approach. Remember, an employer wants to hire someone with genuine enthusiasm for this specific position. Apply for a job because you are genuinely excited for the role and the opportunity to work within the company. Demonstrate this enthusiasm in your application and in your conversations with a potential employer. Give yourself a chance to shine.

2.     Read carefully the scale of the role

Employers list hours based on what the role demands, so if a job is advertised as full-time, it likely requires those hours to be done effectively. If you can’t commit to full-time work, it’s best to focus on roles that match your availability to avoid mismatched expectations.

3.     Ensure you meet the majority of the requirements

You don’t need to meet every requirement, but to progress past the initial screening, your application must align closely with the job description. Employers typically have a mix of “must-haves” and “nice-to-haves,” so it’s important you can demonstrate how your existing skills enable you to confidently handle most of the key responsibilities.

Employers will consider transferable skills but these need to be highlighted and crafted to demonstrate how these can be of benefit in the role you are applying for.

4.     Customise Your Application Materials

Take the time to tailor your resume and cover letter for each position you apply to. Highlight relevant experiences and skills that specifically match what the employer is seeking. This personalised approach demonstrates your genuine interest and helps you stand out from applicants who use a generic resume and cover letter.

5.     Temporary work

Taking a temporary assignment can give you some breathing space. It gives you the opportunity to be more discerning and wait for the right role.  It can also be your foot in the door with a business to secure a new opportunity.

Temporary assignments can be short or long-term, can be extended and can become a permanent role.

If you are not currently working, a temporary assignment gives you a sense of purpose and additional income whilst you search for your ideal role. It can be an opportunity to showcase existing skills and gain new ones.

Finding Your Perfect Fit

Finding the right job isn't just about meeting immediate needs; it's about securing a position where you can truly thrive and grow. By targeting roles that align with your skills, values, and aspirations, you're setting yourself up for greater job satisfaction and long-term success.

The path to meaningful employment may take patience, but the reward—waking up energised and engaged in your day—is absolutely worth the selective approach.
