The hardest interview question and how to answer it

Posted On October 16, 2025

Many candidates stumble when asked: “What are your key strengths and attributes?” It can feel like boasting – but in an interview, modesty won’t do you any favours. This is your chance to highlight what you bring to the table and show why you’re the best fit for the role.

Employers want to hear this from you. When you share your strengths with confidence, it’s easier for them to picture you in the role — and to see why they should hire you over other applicants.

How to identify your strengths

If you’re not sure where to start, reflect on:

  • Feedback from managers, colleagues, or performance reviews
  • The parts of your work you’ve had the most success in
  • The tasks you genuinely enjoy and excel at
  • What friends, colleagues, or family say you’re naturally good at

Tailor your answer to the role

Once you’ve got a list, narrow it down to three to five strengths that are most relevant to the job. This keeps your answer focused and shows the interviewer you understand what the role requires.

Frame your response

Don’t just list strengths — bring them to life with examples. The STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is a simple way to add structure and impact.

For instance, instead of just saying “communication,” explain whether you mean written, verbal, or both — and share a specific example of when you demonstrated this.

  • Early career candidates might highlight teamwork, time management, or organisational skills.
  • Experienced candidates could point to project management, leadership, or decision-making.

Practice equals confidence

Even if you’ve defined your strengths, it’s easy to stumble under pressure. Practice your responses so they feel natural and confident.

Remember: if you’ve been invited to an interview, the employer already sees potential in you. They’re now looking for both your technical ability and your soft skills. Confidently sharing your strengths could be the factor that sets you apart.
