Each time you apply for a new position review your existing CV and tailor it to fit the role. It should cover these points:

• Short, Sharp and to the point
  Cut any irrelevant information, two pages is the recommended length. Be concise. For example, include only your most recent academic qualifications.
• Read the job description carefully
  The job description holds all the clues for when you tailor your CV.
  From this highlight your most relevant experience first, so the recruiter/hiring manager/employer can relate you to the job.
• Use your previous experience to your advantage
  Spell out your achievements and back up your statements. Jo recommends you “use examples of what you have done in the past which verifies your skills and experience.”
• Research
  Do your research. Check out the company website and social media. Align yourself with their brand by demonstrating you have researched them.
  Jo encourages job seekers to pick up the phone to call the company. “Have a script prepared to introduce yourself, explain why you are calling and ask a question about the business. If you can engage with the company before you send through your CV, you are more likely to be recognised when your application is received.”
• Reflect on Key words
  In this age of technology, CVs are often scanned for key words within the job. The easy way to check if your CV is on track is to highlight the key words in the job description and compare these to the key words in your CV. You may need to swap/add a couple of words.
• Include references relevant to the job.
  Always add references to your CV. Jo advises your referees need to be current, relevant to the job you are applying for and aware you are looking for work. Ensure the contact details for your referee are correct. “Make sure there are no barriers for a potential employer to contact your references, as their feedback and verification of your skills and as an employee is hugely advantageous to you getting the job you want.”
