In January and February 2013, Manawatu employers have really taken to placing employment opportunities on seek.co.nz and TradeMe to advertise their roles and get the best people.

This is understandable as the online world is the way of the future with less and less people reading paper-based advertising, as seen by the ever decreasing number of adverts in newspapers. Online advertising is instant, relatively low cost, dynamic and the results are easily measurable.

We wish it was as simple/easy as quickly placing an advert up on a website and then hiring from those applicants. The sad reality is the most qualified and suitable applicants may NEVER see your advertising because they are not actively looking at that time. In the same way a fish will never take your bait if it is not swimming where you are fishing.

To be effective you need to put your baited hook in the pools where the hungry fish are! Put your roles in front of the people you really want to be in your business!

As recently as today, we have been contacted by a number of local employers who have advertised and received some applications – but not the right ones! Out of frustration they came to us to change their results.

They don't have the resources to attract, screen and manage a pool of people for their infrequent or very specific job opportunities. After confirming their needs – we are already discussing highly qualified people that didn't apply to their advert. It wasn't a bad advert, it covered the right information, but the right people weren't reading it!
