Facebook can lead to dismissals

In drafting our last post, we unintentionally have made this FACEBOOK MONTH.

We read this online http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/7396010/Facebook-photos-endanger-sick-leave

The short version is an individual took sick leave and then had facebook telling the story of someone who appeared to not be unwell enough to be on sick leave. We are not here to question the facts but have to make the observation that employees social media activities appear to have an impact on their employment.

A respected Employment Law Specialist Susan Hornsby-Geluk  said:

"If you are out engaging in social activities, when you should be at home on your sickbed, you run a higher risk of being caught these days . . ."

As employer's of people we feel you should not be actively invading the privacy of staff, by regularly researching them online - or FACEBOOK STALKING.

But it does seem that  facebook is playing an increasing part  in the relationship between employer's and employee's and that employees who post inappropriate content and show they are not unwell may well find Facebook get's them into "interesting territory".

It begs the question "what does your facebook profile say about you?" or even worse are you a "Linkedin Liar"? .... we'll save that for a later post.  :-D

    Does attitude trump experience?

Yes! Attitude is key to a successful placing, as opposed to simply matching an employee with the right skill set for the job.

Ask yourself; does the candidate possess the ability to learn? If the candidate is enthusiastic and intelligent they likely can be taught the required skills for the job, as opposed to a candidate with the required technical skill set but a less than enthusiastic attitude.
